The power of touch has long been documented. As a matter of fact, touch has been used synonymously with love. A pat is more than a contact, it signifies a deeper sense of belongingness, reassurance, care, and acceptance. A caress, on the other hand, speaks volumes of emotions in different degrees. This is the reason why in the medical field, there is what is called a touch therapy. Touch therapy is being used to ease a patient’s feeling of pain, stress and tension through the use of touch. Through touch therapy, patients who are to undergo operations and other painful procedures are more at peace and easy to deal with. This same principle applies to an emerging trend in baby care – infant massage. Although infant massage is an old-fashioned idea, it is only now that it is gaining wide acceptance all over the world. It has been found out that we need touch for survival, for our brain to grow and that the stimulation of the skin is essential for adequate organic and psychological development. Just imagine how a caring touch can be beneficial to an infant who needs reassurance that someone is there to protect them from the harsh realities of a world so much different from the serene and tranquil environment they have grown accustomed to for nine months. Infant, as well as kid massage can give the following benefits to your child/ren: • Massage can stimulate nerves in the brain that facilitates food absorption, resulting in faster weight gain • Massage can lower stress hormones, resulting in improved immune function • Can help premature infants gain weight faster, asth matic children improve breathing function, diabetic children comply with treatment, and sleepless and restless babies to sleep more easily. As a matter of fact, even babies and children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) find serenity in massage • Improve parent-child interactions since the process gives both parents and their children time to bond and be more attached to each other. |
